Must See Sections at Sagrada Familia

The Nativity Facade

This is the most ornate and intricate of the basilica’s facades, depicting the birth of Jesus. The detailed carvings of animals, angels, and the Holy Family, combined with Gaudí’s unique interpretation of nature and biblical scenes, make it a breathtaking first impression of the Sagrada Familia.

The best time to visit the Nativity Facade of Sagrada Familia is in the morning, ideally right after it opens, as the light enhances the stonework and you can take your time exploring the details without the midday rush.

If you’re not an early riser, late afternoon is another great time, as the fading sunlight creates a soft glow on the facade, adding a dramatic effect to the architecture. Keep in mind that this area can get quite busy, so early or later in the day is best for a more serene experience.

The Interior of the Basilica

Stepping inside the Sagrada Familia is like entering a forest of stone. Gaudí designed the interior with soaring columns that resemble trees, creating a surreal, otherworldly effect. The play of light through the stained-glass windows adds to the ethereal atmosphere, casting vibrant colours across the space.

The Glory Facade

Although still under construction, the Glory Facade will ultimately be the main entrance to the basilica. The impressive sculptures on this facade represent Heavenly Jerusalem and the final judgement. The intricate details and monumental scale of the Glory Facade are awe-inspiring.

Insider tip: early morning risers will be rewarded with the best light and views, without crowds.

The Towers (Especially the Jesus Tower)

If you have the chance, take the elevator to the top of one of the towers for panoramic views of Barcelona. The Jesus Tower is particularly striking, symbolising Christ’s connection to the heavens, and offers spectacular views of the city and a close-up of Gaudí’s architectural genius.

Insider tip: If you can, aim for early morning and late afternoon, for a more exclusive experience.

The Crypt

Beneath the main church lies the crypt, where Gaudí is buried. This quiet, sacred space is often less crowded and provides a deeper connection to Gaudí’s vision. The crypt also features some of the most remarkable early work by Gaudí, including subtle organic forms that were ahead of his time.

Insider tip: Consider arriving by 9 am so that you can enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere, before the crowds descend. Late afternoon, close to closing time, is also a good option, when the light creates a unique ambiance.Almanac Barcelona has been designed with the sophisticated traveller in mind.
