Our Favourite Festive Experiences
Prague is beautiful throughout the year, but during Advent the city takes on a completely different atmosphere. Historic squares glow with festive lights, Christmas markets fill the streets, and the city comes alive with the sights, sounds and flavours of the season. It’s easy to see why Prague is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas destinations, and Advent is undoubtedly one of the most memorable times to visit the Czech capital. Perfectly located in the heart of the city, Almanac X Alcron Prague is an ideal starting point for discovering the very best of the festive season. Many of Prague’s Christmas highlights are within easy walking distance, while the rest are just a short journey away by public transport.
Here are a few of our reception team’s favourite ways to experience Advent in Prague.
Discover Prague’s Christmas Markets
- Old Town Square (Must-see): If it’s your first Christmas in Prague, start here. This is the heart of the city’s Advent celebrations, where a magnificent Christmas tree, festive stalls and live performances create an atmosphere that draws visitors back year after year. 3–5 minutes walk from the hotel.
- Wenceslas Square (Steps away): Right around the corner from the hotel, this market is the perfect place to combine Christmas shopping with festive treats such as mulled wine, hot mead, gingerbread and traditional Czech vanocka. 10 minutes walk.
- Republic Square (Local favourite): For a cosier experience, this smaller market is perfect for browsing the festive stalls, enjoying seasonal treats and experiencing a more local side of Prague’s Advent. 7–10 minutes on foot. An easy stroll through the picturesque historic center, such as via Celetná street.
- Kampa Island (Hidden gem): Tucked away beneath Charles Bridge, this charming riverside market offers a welcome escape from the bustle of the city centre. Pause for a while, slow down and enjoy one of Prague’s most atmospheric corners on the banks of the Vltava River. 20–25 minutes on foot across the iconic Charles Bridge, or ~15 minutes via tram to the Malostranská stop.
- Prague Castle (Iconic views): Make your way to Prague Castle, where Christmas markets and spectacular winter views come together to create one of Prague’s most memorable festive experiences. 15–20 minutes on foot or ~15 minutes by taking tram 22 from Malostranské náměstí.
- Peace Square (Concierge favourite): Set against the magnificent Church of St. Ludmila, these Christmas markets are among Prague’s most beautiful. Afterwards, take time to stroll through the elegant streets of Vinohrady, one of the city’s most charming neighbourhoods, known for its elegant architecture, stylish cafés and relaxed local atmosphere. 25–30 minutes via tram 22 down to Malostranská and transfer to the green Metro Line A directly to the Náměstí Míru station.
Follow the Magic of Advent
- Charles Bridge Lamplighter (Perfect after dark): As dusk falls,head to Charles Bridge to watch the traditional lamplighter, dressed in period costume, light the historic gas lamps by hand. It’s a beautiful reminder of Prague’s pre-electric past.
- Nicholas Day (Local tradition): If you’re visiting Prague on 5 December, you’re in for one of the country’s most beloved traditions. St. Nicholas, angels and devils fill Prague’s streets from mid-afternoon, while children sing songs and recite poems in exchange for sweet treats.
- Nativity Scenes (Festive tradition): Many of Prague’s historic churches display beautifully crafted nativity scenes throughout Advent. For something truly special, visit the Church of Our Lady Victorious, home to the famous Infant Jesus of Prague, where you can also explore a unique museum showcasing nativity scenes from around the world.
- Christmas Concerts (Perfect winter evening): A concert with carols in Smetana Hall at Municipal House is one of the season’s highlights, while festive performances also take place at the Klementinum, the Spanish Synagogue and Prague’s historic churches.
- The Nutcracker (Seasonal classic): No Christmas season is complete without this timeless ballet, performed throughout Advent by the Czech National Ballet at the State Opera.
Enjoy Prague’s Winter Traditions
- Outdoor Ice Skating (Family fun): Fancy a classic winter afternoon? Lace up your skates at one of Prague’s seasonal outdoor rinks, such as the popular Ovocný trh or the picturesque rink at Na Františku.
- Evening River Cruise (Perfect after dark): For one of the most memorable evening views, take a cruise along the Vltava and watch Prague’s illuminated skyline glide by.
- Historic Christmas Tram (Festive icon): Beautifully decorated for the festive season, Prague’s historic Christmas tram is one of the city’s most photogenic holiday icons.
No two Advent visits to Prague are ever quite the same.
